Eat healthy

The Paleo Diet – It’s not a new diet, it’s not a fad, it’s infact possibly the healthiest diet you could go on. For that reason I’m not going to call it a diet, because the work is associated with trying to lose weight.

Instead it should be considered a lifestyle. It’s proven to drammatically improve your health, so if you’re looking for a healthy lifestyle….this is it.

Essentially, eating the foods that our ancestors would have done, way back in evolutionary history.

And if you think about it, it makes perfect sense.

In terms of origins of the species and evolution of the planet we’re not that far along the line from our caveman ancestors, so our bodies and what we’re built to consume and digest hasn’t changed that much either. Yet we expect our bodies to be able to cope with man-made substances, preservatives, additives, refined and processed foods, and not suffer as a result. When you put it like that it does seem complete lunacy doesn’t it!

I’ve never been one to enjoy fast food or processed food. Although my friends don’t believe me I can honestly count the number of McDonalds I’ve had on one hand, and I’ve never eaten Burger King, KFC etc. I only ever bought microwave meals when I was in uni and didn’t know better and I steer clear of products that just don’t “seem” natural, if you know what I mean.

I was reading a healthy eating book once and it gave a really good piece of advice; if there is an ingredient on the back of a food packet that your grandma wouldn’t have recognised, probably better not to eat it. Meaning that unless a 1940s housewife would have had that in her pantry (because let’s face it, there wasn’t preprepared food in those days), it’s probably not good for you and you shouldn’t eat it. Quite a simple rule to follow and I’ve stuck to it.

So, I’m extending this thinking and going Paleo – take a look at this website, it’s a source of great info –

What is Paleo?

In my mind it’s pretty straightforward, it’s based around eating foods from the groups our hunter-gatherer ancestors would have during the Paleolithic era – from around 2.5m years ago to the beginning of the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago.

Foods include – fresh meats (free range), fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and healthier oils.

Foods to avoid (because they weren’t part of this diet) – cereals, dairy, refined sugars, processed foods, legumes.

Our ancestors were free from many of the diseases that inflict western society where quite frankly we consume far too much and of the wrong thing. Diseases such as obesity, CVD, Diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, myopia and on and on and on.
