The injury gene?

In the news today – Team GB scientists are looking at whether genetic tests can identify athletes that are more prone to injury.

Common niggles and injuries including those to tendons and stress fractures are common in elite athletes, but some people are more susceptible than others.

The team of scientists, headed by University College London’s Prof Montgomery say they have found a gene that influences the risk of stress fractures.

The aim is that the research will enable training and rehabilitation to be able to be individually tailored based on this information.

There is a definite link to these kinds of injuries and diet, repetitive strain and loading, but now scientists are also saying there is a strong genetic element.

Prof Montgomery has already discovered the ACE gene that is linked with endurance. He is now working closely with the English Institute of Sport (EIS) which applies the latest in sports research to benefit athletes.
